Lessons for My 18 Year Old Son

My son Weston turned 18 this summer. 18 seems like a big year, and I wanted to share with him some insights that I feel will be helpful as he steps into these new chapters of life and adulthood.

Three things immediately came to mind, and I feel they are valuable not just for an 18 year old, but for all of us in life and work.

1. Be grateful for everything.
I love being around grateful people. They make the room lighter, they make the days brighter, they make our teams stronger. Thankfulness undergirds everything else in leadership. It shapes our perspective, and helps us see what is worth celebrating, not just what needs fixing. Be grateful for everything.

2. Give more than you take.
In every situation that you find yourself in, seek to be a giver more than a taker. Offer your hand. Contribute. Step up. Lean in. The best leaders I know give more than they take. Try it this week, and see how it shapes your attitude. You will be richer for it.

3. Don't be afraid to ask for help.
This is the one that took me many years to learn. I thought being a strong leader meant I always knew what to do, and didn't need help from others. It's actually the opposite. The best leaders I know are quick to ask for help, invite others in to find the solution together. Wisdom means including others. Putting your hand up and saying "I don't know, but we do". Don't be afraid to ask for help from those around you.

I'm so proud of my son, and love the path that is ahead for him. I hope he finds wisdom in these three simple but profound lessons that have helped guide me. And I hope they are valuable for you as well. Cheering you on!
